October Turns the Harbour Next Door Into a Public Weigh-In

The Destin Fishing Rodeo has been held every October since 1948. It runs the whole month rather than a weekend, it is open to anglers fishing from registered boats, and its practical effect on a visitor is that Destin Harbor becomes a free spectator sport for thirty-one days.

Boats come in through the afternoon and hang their catch on the scales. Categories cover a long list of species. A leaderboard runs all month and changes daily. You do not need to be fishing, or to know anything about fishing, to find an hour at the weigh-in station interesting, and for children it is considerably more engaging than an aquarium, because the fish arrive unpredictably and people shout.

The Destin Seafood Festival sits alongside it on the harbour boardwalk early in the month, which makes the first weekend of October the busiest and the best of it.

Why October is the month anyway

The tournament exists in October because the fishing is good in October. Summer heat has come off the water but the Gulf is still warm. Bait is moving. The family crowds have gone home and rates on both sides of the pass have dropped. Midweek is genuinely quiet.

For anyone visiting from Fort Walton Beach, the harbour is a short drive east: long by July standards, ordinary by October ones.

If you want to fish rather than watch

Charter availability in October is better than in July but the good boats still book ahead, particularly for the rodeo weekends. The Okaloosa Island Pier fishes well through the month and costs single-digit dollars for an adult, with the Florida licence covered by the pier's own.

Bag limits, size limits and which species are open change through the year and are set by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and, for federally managed species, by the Gulf council. Check current regulations before you keep anything.
